A circa 1900 circular mirror with a cast bronze frame in the Louis XV style, patinated and partly gilded, with acanthus leaves, scrolls and masks.
Description from the seller
Circular mirror in cast patinated metal, partly gilded, in a neorococo or neobaroque style, with a patinated and gilded metal frame, rich decorations of acanthus leaves, scrolls and mascarons, late 19th – early 20th century.
Frame composed of curved elements joined by metal pins, adorned with rich applications of acanthus leaves, vegetal tendrils and mascarons of a Bacchic or satyric character. Relief-decorations modeled and applied to the main structure. Antique finish in tones of bronzed brown with residue of gilding. Circular glass and rear protective panel.
- Mirror diameter: 62 cm.
- Indicative maximum footprint: up to about 82 cm.
- Total weight: 11 kg.
- Frame material: presumably bronze or other copper alloy.
- Era: probably late 19th – first decades of the 20th century.
The sturdy back ring and the metal trefoil testify to a hanging system designed to support a substantial mass. The use of metal pins to connect the elements is consistent with a construction obtained by assembling several heavy cast pieces (not sheets). The acanthus leaves, tendrils and mascarons display very accurate three-dimensional modeling. Of particular interest is the bearded mascaron, with vegetal elements seeming to emerge from the hair: an ornamental solution of Baroque derivation, revived by 19th-century historicist production.
