Specimen: Volutoconus grossi, 59 mm, GEM quality, from Swain Reefs, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, collected March 1988.
Description from the seller
Product description & Scientific data
Scientific name: Volutoconus grossi (Iredale, 1927).
Common name: Gross' volute (engl. Gross's Volute or McMichael's Volute).
Quality grade: GEM (Flawless collectible; the smooth shell surface, the rounded apex with the fine original-cast shell, and the characteristic aperture lip with four prominent spindle folds are perfectly preserved).
Size: 59 mm (5.9 cm) – Rare dwarf form! Since adult specimens of this kind are usually at least 60 mm, this 59 mm specimen is an excellent example of a small, superb specimen.
Color & pattern: The shell displays the classic salmon-to-red-brown base coloration with attractive white, tent-like blotches.
Special feature: As is typical for the family Volutidae, this species has no operculum (closing lid) in adulthood.
Family: Volutidae (volutes).
Origin & habitat
Geographic origin: Swain Reefs, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia.
Collection date: March 1988 (historic older collection). Exact collection data from well before the turn of the millennium significantly enhance the appeal and historical value of such a specimen.
Habitat: An endemic Australian deep-water species that lives benthically at depths of typically 35 to over 150 meters and is usually recovered by shrimp or deep-sea fishing ships using trawling.
