Specimen: collector's whelk Lyria cloveriana (84 mm, top condition GEM) – scientific name Voluta lyria cloveriana, origin Sri Lanka, year 1980.
Description from the seller
Scientific name: Lyria cloveriana (Weaver, 1963) – named in honor of the famous American conchologist Phillip W. Clover. In the German-speaking world it is also listed as Clover Lyre snail or Lyre-wal snail.
Origin & Localities: Southern Sri Lanka; this exquisite specimen comes precisely from the shallow coastal depths off Tangalla (often spelled Tangalle), one of the best-known type localities for this endemic species.
Habitat: A predatory gastropod endemic to Sri Lanka, living on sandy to muddy seafloor substrates at moderate depths of 20 to 80 meters. The shells are usually selectively recovered as bycatch from near-bottom nets by local fishermen.
Size & Preservation: 84 mm – an impressive large-format specimen! While the typical average length of this species is about 70 to 75 mm, a specimen over 80 mm already ranks among the sought-after, stately treasures on the international collector market. Condition GEM (Absolute Museum and top quality): perfectly preserved, knobby orange-red apex (protoconch), a flawless, concave shell lip without the usual net scratches or bite marks, and an intensely developed, high-contrast zigzag and longitudinal stripe pattern
