Pair of two white craquelé ceramic Art Deco bookends showing Pierrots with a mandolin, manufactured by Émaux De Louvière in Belgium and associated with designer Max le Verrier, each about 17.5 cm high, 15 cm wide and 11.5 cm deep, total weight 1.15 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of age and spots, bottom stamped by the maker, with one Pierrot nose having a small imperfection.
Description from the seller
This is a rare pair of art-deco bookends (serre-livres) made of molded white craquelé ceramic depicting figures from the classical character Pierrot, the melancholic clown Pierrot with a large ruff and a mandolin in hand, resting against the raised support
Material: White glazed earthenware or porcelain with a distinctive craquelé effect (fine hairline cracks in the glaze).
Style: Art-deco
Bottom: provided with a manufacturer stamp Émaux de Louvière
Emaux de La Louvière (by the Boch Frères Keramis factory in Belgium) is one of the leading manufacturers for this kind of objects!
During the Art Deco period (around 1920-1930) this faience produced many animal or figurative sculptures and binders with the help of this technique of white earthenware or craquelé enamel cream.
In their catalog from that period we find several variants of characters from the Commedia dell'arte, including these dreamy Pierrots or musicians, who share exactly the same stylized silhouette, the same thick rectangular base and the distinctive cracked glossy finish.
Style Max le Verrier
Height 17.5 cm
15 cm x 11.5 cm
Base thickness 2 cm
Total weight 1.150 kg
