Bois
Height 510mm
Width: 150mm
Depth: 120mm
Magnificent Yaouré mask of 51 cm (central region of Ivory Coast).
1. Origin & Aesthetic Canon of Yaouré
Origin: Yaouré people (or Yauré), settled around Bouaflé, at the junction of Baoulé and Gouro territories.
The main face: Of great refinement, with an elongated oval shape, almond-shaped half-closed eyes expressing inner calm, a straight and fine nose, and discreet geometric scarifications on the temples.
Dentellation: The lower edge of the face is fringed with a regular toothed border, a classic signature of Yaouré sculptors.
The hybrid superstructure:
A bird beak (calao) delicately plunges toward the forehead.
Two large horns rise in a cradle, providing verticality that gives the piece its beautiful height of 51 cm.
At the center of the horns stands a stylized elephant head with tusks and a trunk (or a composite figure of protection).
2. Ritual Use: The Cult of Je (or Yu)
Among the Yaouré, a mask of this character belongs to the restricted ritual group of Je:
Funerals and mourning rites: It is danced mainly during solemn funerals of notable chiefs or village leaders.
Village purification: Its presence serves to purify the community after the imbalance caused by death, guide the spirit of the deceased to the world of ancestors, and restore social order.
Sacred character: Worn by a dancer of the Je society, the mask is subject to strict ritual rules; at certain phases of the ceremony, its sight is formally prohibited to women to protect them from spiritual powers manipulated.
3. Symbolic Function
The iconography gathers three major symbols of Yaouré cosmogony:
The Elephant: Symbol of sovereign authority, measured strength, memory, and wisdom.
The Calao (the bird): Intermediary between heaven and earth, it embodies clairvoyance and transmits prayers to the ancestors.
The Horns: Evoke the wild energy of the bush, vital power, and fertility.
The harmony between the serene features of the human face and the attributes of the great totemic animals aims to tame the raw power of the bush to put it at the service of peace, prestige, and village protection.
The packages are shipped Monday to Saturday with insurance and tracking number.
