- Year: 1916.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA · 1916, around the female bust of the Republic facing left, wearing the Phrygian cap. Reverse: 50 CENTAVOS, with the Portuguese national shield over the armillary sphere, surrounded by ornamental olive branches.
- Grade: MS64 (NGC).
Silver 50 Cents coin minted in Lisbon in 1916, during the early years of the Portuguese First Republic, established after the revolution of October 5, 1910, which ended the monarchy. The obverse features an elegant female personification of the Republic, in left profile and wearing the characteristic Phrygian cap, symbol of liberty and of republican ideals, rendered in a classic style of notable artistic delicacy. The reverse shows the national Portuguese shield over the traditional armillary sphere, emblem of the maritime history and Portuguese discoveries, framed by carefully molded vegetal branches. A specimen in excellent condition, with well-defined relief, abundant original metallic luster and attractive silvery surfaces, accompanied by a light natural patina and discreet surface marks in keeping with its grade of preservation. An interesting issue of Portuguese republican numismatics, minted during the First World War and particularly notable for its preservation quality and its elegant allegorical design.
