Alter Hobel Speichenzapfenhobel with Auflagezwinge, a rare German-made tool for wagon and wheelwrights from ca. 1910–1920, in good condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Old plane, rare tool for the coachbuilder and wheelwright, spoke tenon plane with support vise
The spoke tenon plane with the support vise is in good craft condition.
Everything is complete, easily adjustable and sharp.
Detailed function and description.
The tenon plane with the support vise is a specialized tool for wagon makers, wheelwrights and chair makers,
Among the tasks of a wagon maker was also the manufacture of wooden wheels for coaches, ladder wagons or wheelbarrows.
When assembling such wheels it was necessary that the ends of the spokes, which were fitted as round tenons into the wooden rim, were uniform.
The tenon is understood as the stepped-down end of the spoke in its diameter.
The later wheel load is carried by the shoulder of the tenon.
Therefore the step must be at the same distance from the hub for all spokes, so that the final wheel circumference runs true.
In the past the spokes tenons had to be tediously trimmed with a knife.
With the tenon plane, all tenons could be shaved to the same diameter up to the shoulder efficiently.
The tenon shoulder was simultaneously cut exactly at right angles to the spoke.
The device consists of 2 parts, the plane and the support vise on which the plane rests.
First the support vise is slid onto the spoke and then fixed with a clamp screw with a wooden handle, whose end tapers sharply toward a point so that it cannot move.
On the wide, flat-ground flange of the support vise the plane is now laid, which in turn has a wide flange.
This makes it possible to set the position of the plane on the spoke and thus the length of the spoke up to the tenon shoulder exactly the same for all spokes.
Then the plane is rotated by the outer handles. There are 2 blades – one parallel to the spoke that trims the tenon circumference and thus determines its diameter, the other across the spoke is called the roughing cutter. It cuts the tenon shoulder. While rotating on the support vise, both handles are tightened with a quarter turn each. The two adjustment screws with opposite threads transmit this rotation, thereby reducing the plane opening and allowing the blades to cut deeper. Two more adjustment screws are set once for all spokes and determine the minimum opening of the plane, and thus the final tenon diameter.
This plane will delight all collectors.
The tool is a cultural-historical tool and an internationally highly sought collector’s item.
