Decorative ornament - Decoratieve houten schietschijf – kleurrijke figuur met vogels en Duitse opschriften - Germany - Decorative shooting target

Painted wooden shooting target – probably early 1900s – historical scene and German mottos

A striking centerpiece where color, folk art, and shooting club tradition come together! This round wooden shooting target shows an expressive man in historical costume, wearing an olive-green coat with turquoise cuffs and bright red stockings. In his hands he holds a black hat and colorful birds on strings.

The light, strongly structured background, German inscriptions in Gothic type, and a dark green outer rim give the whole piece a distinctly decorative character. A atmospheric collectible that invites close viewing of the scene and the texts.

A reference to a shooting competition from 1672

According to the supplied description, the inscription at the top left refers to a shooting competition organized on 24 June 1672 by the “honorable companions.” This date concerns the described event. The target itself is presumably manufactured in the early 20th century, possibly after an older model.

The rhymes at the top right seem to contain a playful message about good aiming and successful shooting. The precise transcription and translation of the old script are uncertain. A possible reference to the literary figure Simplicissimus is an interesting interpretation, but not established.

On the bottom right is an encouraging motto, supplied as:

„Herz trau dich nur du hast gewonnen.”

Free translation: “Have faith, you have won!”

Painted shooting targets fit within a long tradition of German-speaking marksmen culture. In addition to competitions and commemorations, humor, celebrations, and daily life found their way into the performances.
