Iron garden planter in the Louis XVI revival style, dating to 1850–1900, with decorative striations, made in France, dimensions 22 cm high by 14 cm wide by 14 cm deep, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
Due to its morphology, this piece leans more toward a Neo-classical Italian or Florentine Renaissance taste reinterpretated in the nineteenth century than to the authentic historical Florentine style. The ribbed cup form, the circular foot, and the absence of exuberant ornamentation recall the models of garden kraters and vessels inspired by Antiquity, very popular during the nineteenth-century historicism.
A jardinière or small ornamental garden bowl made in wrought and cast iron during the nineteenth century, conceived following neorenaissance models of Italian inspiration. The piece presents an elegant trumpet-shaped body traversed by pronounced vertical ridges that accentuate its sense of height and slenderness, terminating in a softly undulating edge that adds dynamism to the silhouette. The lower part is articulated by a fluted area that connects with a short central pedestal and a wide circular base, providing stability and visual balance to the whole.
The surface preserves traces of its old polychromy or gilded finish, today transformed over time into an attractive patina where ochre, golds, and soft oxidations coexist, enriching its historical character. These signs of use and aging give the piece an authenticity especially valued in decorative garden elements and landscape architecture of the nineteenth century.
Its sober and harmonious design finds parallels in productions inspired by Florentine Renaissance models, reinterpreted during the historicist period for the ornamentation of terraces, galleries, greenhouses, and gardens of bourgeois residences and country houses. The purity of its lines, together with the nobility of the worked iron, makes this jardinière an elegant example of exterior decorative arts, capable of integrating into both classical and eclectic environments.
Beyond its function as a plant container, the piece has a strong sculptural presence, evoking the small ornamental urns that decorated Italian and French gardens of the nineteenth century. Its balanced proportion, the strength of its ribbed modeling, and the beauty of its historic patina convert it into an attractive testament to the neorenaissance taste that characterized much of the European decoration of the era.
