Pair of French occasional tables from 1970–1980, combining wood, brass and smoked glass in a mid-century modern design inspired by the Louis XVI style.
Description from the seller
Pair of design side tables from the second half of the 20th century, conceived as an elegant reinterpretation of the French neoclassical models inspired by the Louis XVI style. Their structure combines noble wood, gilt brass, and crystal, achieving a refined balance between decorative tradition and the sophisticated aesthetics of quality furniture produced during the last third of the past century.
Each table features a solid square base veneered in wood of a warm mahogany tone, decorated with careful geometric marquetry that frames a central medallion of classical inspiration. This ornamental motif, placed in the center of the lower top, evokes the refined marqueteur work of the 18th century and adds visual depth to the set. The presence of contrasting inlays and the symmetrical arrangement of the grains reinforce the distinguished character of the composition.
Four cylindrical turned brass columns rise from the base to support the upper smoked glass top with beveled edge. These columns, inspired by classical architectural forms, recall the fluted supports present in the Louis XVI repertoire, though reinterpreted through purer lines and contemporary materials. The circular brass finials contribute to the sense of balance and elegance.
The glass top provides visual lightness and allows the decorative richness of the lower marquetry to be appreciated at all times, making it a protagonist element of the design. The contrast between the transparency of the glass, the golden shine of the brass, and the warmth of the wood creates a particularly attractive combination, ideal for classic interiors, neoclassical spaces, or Hollywood Regency-inspired settings.
This is a versatile and decorative pair, perfect as end tables or corner tables, noted for the quality of their materials, the harmony of their proportions, and the successful fusion of the eighteenth-century French aesthetic legacy with the decorative design of the second half of the 20th century.
