Emaille straatnaambord ‘Rembrandtstraße’ – diepblauw met witte letters – circa 1920–1930 - Plate - Enamel - Antique street name sign

Enamel street sign ‘Rembrandtstraße’ – dark blue with white letters – circa 1920–1930

A powerful piece of street history with a particularly recognizable name! This elongated enamel street sign bears the inscription ‘Rembrandtstraße’ in large white letters on a deep blue background. The pronounced typography and the worn finish make it an attractive eye-catcher.

The name refers to Rembrandt van Rijn, the famous Dutch painter and etcher. The German spelling with the characteristic ‘ß’ gives the sign its own graphic character. A beautiful connection between Dutch art history and German-speaking street culture.

During enamelling, a glassy layer is fused to a metal substrate at high temperature. This yields the characteristic gloss and deep colors that make old enamel signs so appealing. In this example, the bright white forms a lovely contrast with the dark blue and the worn edges.

Beautiful as a wall object in an industrial interior, study, or studio, and an appealing addition for collectors of historic street signs and enamel.
