This copper 2-stuiver bonk from the Dutch East Indies is a contemporary counterfeit with the date 8101, apparently intended to read 1810, and weighs 10.33 g.
Description from the seller
Special contemporary counterfeit with a fantasy year divided over 2 lines.
Probably 1810 is meant, but the engraver forgot to cut the year in mirror image on the poinçon or more likely loose dies were used for the year, this because behind the lower 8101 there is also a 9 stamped.
Front: 8I0I / 8I0I9 inside pearl rectangle
Reverse: 2 : S : inside pearl rectangle
Material : Copper - Cu
Weight : 10.33 grams
Reference : Vgl. Scholten 573 / Passon 26.4
Quality : VF - XF legible and centrally struck year
Extra info:
The minting of Bonken is born out of necessity: the Dutch provincial Duiten were largely melted down by the local population. At the beginning of January 1796 the available stock of Duiten in the mint house in Batavia was so depleted that a solution had to be found to prevent the monetary circulation from stalling. The Commissioner-General Johannes Siberg proposed to manufacture Bonken from the available Japanese sheet copper. The bars were cut into pieces to enable rapid, efficient production. In the spring of 1799 minting temporarily ceased due to a shortage of copper bars; at the end of that year production of these emergency coins resumed. Due to a shortage of silver and gold (new) coins, ‘copper money’ became the norm in the Dutch East Indies. During the occupation of Java and its dependencies the British administration in 1815 put Bonken out of circulation. After the Indies were brought back under Dutch authority, the minting of Bonken saw a brief revival: in 1818 and early 1819 the Mint at Soerabaia minted Bonken from Stivers and Double Stivers.
