A large French Art Nouveau Belle Époque figural mantel clock dating from circa 1900, in good working order, crafted from patinated spelter with a black veined marble panel, brass and gilt mounts, and a mechanical eight‑day movement with a winding key, striking on half an hour with one bell.
Description from the seller
Large Art Nouveau / Belle Époque Figural Mantel Clock – "Muses des Bois" (or "Nymphes") – France, ca. 1900
An exceptional, large French Art Nouveau (Belle Époque) figural mantel clock, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1900).
Design & Allegory:
The central clock case is flanked by a magnificent pair of finely detailed, twin female allegorical figures representing winged woodland muses or nymphs. In an elegant, fluid motion typical of the Art Nouveau period, they hold floral garlands and staffs that join beautifully above the clock dial.
Materials & Craftsmanship:
• Sculpture & Ornaments: Crafted from patinated spelter (régule) with a rich, multi-toned dark bronze finish.
• Base & Accent: The architectural clock housing features a central panel of premium black veined marble, adorned with a gilded floral sprig overlay.
• Gilt Mounts: The entire piece rests on a heavy, robust base decorated with asymmetric, stylized acanthus foliage and scrolling rocaille feet made of ornate gilt metal.
• Dial: The clock features a cream-colored enamel dial with crisp Arabic numerals, a secondary inner track, and elegant steel hands, protected by a hinged glass bezel.
