Description from the seller
Silver mesh purse 835, brand GVK, Germany, 1910s–1920s
Elegant mesh purse crafted in 835 sterling silver, as confirmed by the '835' hallmark visible on the frame next to the manufacturer’s mark 'GVK' inscribed inside a triangular shield. This type of fine coin purses and evening bags, known as 'mesh purses' or silver mesh handbags, were very popular from the late Edwardian era into the early Art Deco period, with production dating to around the 1910s–1920s. The hallmarking system with the 835 fineness and the manufacturer’s mark in a triangular shield is characteristic of German silverware of the time, clearly pointing to a German origin.
The piece is constructed with a fine mesh of silver woven into tiny linked rings, flawless, giving it a flexible, silky drape. It is in perfect condition, complete, with no mesh breaks, the chain also entirely in 835 silver and the interior silk intact (extremely rare). The lower edge is finished with small spherical pendants that add movement and weight to the mesh. The upper frame features a rectangular hammered-decorated (hammered) mount and a kiss-lock clasp with two oval end caps acting as push buttons. The interior is lined in light-toned silk.
Overall excellent condition for its age, with a natural patina on the silver appropriate to the period. The mesh remains intact and flexible, without splits, with all 835-silver weighted tassels and the 835-silver chain present. The kiss-lock closure works properly and the chain is complete. The lower spherical end caps are preserved.
Mesh silver handbags from this period are highly valued by collectors of antique accessories and silverware, as well as for their decorative appeal and vintage fashion. The presence of the 835 fineness hallmark next to the manufacturer’s mark 'GVK' in a triangular shield reinforces its authenticity and traceability. They stand as a testament to the refinement of women’s fashion in the early 20th century and the high quality of German metalwork of the era.
