Rare eighteenth-century postal map of England and Wales - Sayer & Bowles, ca. 1770.
Fine copper-plate engraving (etching) printed on contemporary laid paper. Published in London by the renowned printers Robert Sayer and Carington Bowles, the map is structured to illustrate in meticulous detail the network of the "Post Roads" (the royal postal routes) of England and Wales in the eighteenth century. The work is enriched at the bottom with a detailed county legend and at the top right with a splendid large figurative cartouche depicting a posting station with horses and a milestone.
Conditions: Very good, ink strongly contrasted, usual editorial folds, margins sound as in photographic reproductions. A piece of notable historical-geographical importance.
