Description from the seller
Corallo Blu – Heliopora coerulea | A sphere with a marine-architectural design
A decorative spherical piece carved from a natural blue coral skeleton, Heliopora coerulea (Pallas, 1766), a marine species belonging to the family Helioporidae. The specimen presents a blue-gray to azure tint, interwoven with slate-blue shades and ivory-white areas, with a surface characterized by tiny cavities, radial structures, and irregular openings.
The workmanship has transformed the coral material into an approximately spherical form, preserving large natural cavities that traverse the body of the object. The result is an open structure, in which smooth surfaces alternate with the inner portions of the skeleton, allowing the distinctive organization of the material to be observed.
Heliopora coerulea occupies an interesting position in marine zoology. Although it is a coral capable of building a rigid calcareous skeleton, it does not belong to the common hard corals of the order Scleractinia, but to the order Helioporacea, within the Octocorallia. Its polyps have eight tentacles, a characteristic shared with other representatives of this group.
