A polychrome ceramic funerary figurine from the Western Han Dynasty, a tall, slender standing stickman, 48.6 cm high and 8.2 cm wide, dating to 206 BC–220 AD, in good condition with proven provenance from Galerie/Antiquaire and acquired in 2023 from the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
RARE CHINESE STATUETTE - STICKMAN
Polychrome ceramic with red and black pigments, partially worn.
Funerary ceramic figurine depicting a man, standing, in a grave, finely modeled, with a solemn posture.
The statuette is distinguished by its elongated body and very straight posture, with an extended torso and legs. The feet, slender, form almost a right angle with the body.
The figure is naked. The hair, polychrome black, is tied back. Originally, these figurines were clothed. They also had wooden arms fixed at the sides and were articulated, but these elements have disappeared, as they are perishable materials.
These sculptures, called “Stickman” due to their shape, were placed in the tombs of the royal family, accompanied by other similar sculptures as a funerary ensemble.
The idea was to represent an army present in the tomb to help and protect the deceased in the afterlife.
China, Western Han dynasty, circa 200 BCE
Dimensions: Height 48.6 cm - Width 8.2 cm
Excellent condition - no restoration
The Han dynasty was a period of prosperity and stability for China, and the tombs of its rulers bear witness to this affluence.
Inside the tumuli, hundreds, even thousands, of miniature figurines were arranged, recreating daily life at the imperial court or in the world of the nobility.
The manufacture of all these ceramic figurines gave rise to a flourishing industry, and workshop remains have been found near the tumuli.
This magnificent example gives us a glimpse of the appearance of a Han elite woman.
