This unsigned cast bronze portrait plaque from Germany, dated 1900, depicts Frederick the Great in left-facing profile and measures 20 × 14.5 cm.
Description from the seller
The subject is identified as Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), known as Frederick the Great. He is depicted in profile to the left, wearing his distinctive hairstyle and hat, a bicorne often depicted as a hat with a soft horn or a stylized night cap. The long sideburns are also typical of his portraits.
Massive bronze cast.
Lost-wax casting or sand casting (the hollow back shows a rough texture characteristic).
The reverse is hollow, a common design to reduce weight and material for large plaques.
There is a bronze mounting boss on the back, onto which a modern metal support plate has been bolted with two screws. This is a non-original but common modification to allow easier hanging and is not considered detrimental to value.
Weight: 1.399 kg - A substantial weight confirming that this is solid bronze.
Length (vertical): approximately 20 cm
Width (horizontal): approximately 14.5 cm
Overall condition is excellent for its age.
The high points of the relief (the cheeks, the hat) show expected patina wear, revealing the lighter color of the bronze beneath. This adds depth and is not considered a defect.
The patina is rich and varied, with areas of dark brown and natural verdigris (oxidation) in the recessed areas, which is a desirable feature indicating age.
There are no cracks, chips, or repairs.
The rear mounting plate is an acceptable late addition.
This is an authentic cast bronze portrait plaque of Frederick the Great. The casting is of high quality, with natural and attractive patina. The combination of a popular historical subject makes it a sought-after collectible.
