Description from the seller
Hoe-Shaped Iron Currency – Chamba / Mabila Type – Nigeria – 38.5 cm
Origin: Northern Nigeria, Chamba / Mabila cultural area (attributed)
Type: Traditional hoe-shaped iron currency
Material: Forged iron
Dimensions: 38.5 × 10.5 cm
Period: Presumably early 20th century
Provenance: Personally collected in situ by the present owner in the early 1990s
An elegant traditional hoe-shaped iron currency from northern Nigeria, attributed to the Chamba / Mabila cultural area.
The piece is distinguished by its restrained proportions and strong minimalist character.
A broad, flattened, almost rectangular blade with slightly rounded shoulders extends into a long, narrow, tapering tang. The transition between the two elements is particularly well executed, creating a harmonious and balanced silhouette.
The forged iron displays a beautifully aged surface, with warm reddish-brown oxidation, darker areas and subtle irregularities revealing the character of the material.
Its remarkable simplicity gives the object an almost abstract, sculptural presence.
Cultural context
Hoe-shaped iron currencies were used among various communities of northern Nigeria and neighbouring Cameroon as traditional forms of wealth and exchange.
Inspired by agricultural implements, these iron objects could serve purposes beyond ordinary commercial transactions, including important social exchanges and matrimonial payments.
Comparable examples have been attributed to the Chamba and Mabila cultural areas, although precise ethnic classification remains difficult because similar forms circulated between neighbouring communities.
A particularly close comparison is documented in the Reto Zehnder Collection (Ethnic Design), reference 07.03.720, a Chamba-attributed hoe currency measuring 39 × 11 cm.
The present example shares its distinctive slender proportions and austere design.
Condition
Good overall condition, with extensive old surface oxidation, minor abrasions and slight irregularities consistent with age.
The general form is well preserved.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
Included
The iron currency only.
The metal display stand visible in the photographs is not included in the sale.
