Uljaytu, son of Arghun, succeeded his brother Ghazan as Ilkhan of Persia in 1304. Baptised a Christian as a child, he later embraced Sunni Islam and around 1310 turned to Twelver Shi'ism, a shift announced on his coinage by the names of the twelve imams and the phrase Ali wali Allah. He completed the new capital of Sultaniyya, crowned by his vast domed mausoleum, and kept the historian Rashid al-Din as vizier. He died in 1316 and was succeeded by his son Abu Sa'id.
