Description from the seller
Hand-painted square maiolica tile, glazed, early 20th century, characterized by a crackled finish (craquelé) spread across the entire surface depicting a sacred scene of the Way of the Cross (the meeting between Jesus and his Mother, the Virgin Mary). Jesus Christ is depicted carrying a heavy wooden cross on his shoulders. He wears a light tunic (beige/nut-brown) and is crowned by a radiant golden halo around his head. He has brown beard and hair and is shown barefoot in motion. On the left: The Virgin Mary is represented kneeling or leaning toward Jesus, painted with a broad blue/azure draped cloak. Her hands are open in a gesture of sorrow, welcome and empathy toward her son. At the bottom center, on the edge of the earth, there is a monogram or signature of the author (a pair of letters “AA” or a similar symbol).
Measure: 36.8 x 36.8 x 2.1 cm thick.
Frame: A decorative painted border that delineates the scene with lines in tones of yellow, orange and black.
