Description from the seller
Bronze appliqué with anthropomorphic mask – Imperial Roman art
Culture: Roman.
Reference period: Roman Empire, 1st–3rd centuries AD.
Material: Cast bronze.
Dimensions: 76 × 31 × 11 mm.
Description for auction:
Interesting figurative bronze piece depicting an expressive anthropomorphic mask, characterized by its pronounced sculptural relief and facial features with strong visual impact.
The composition presents a face with exaggerated features, with eyes fully drilled, prominent nose, thick lips and deep furrows that accentuate its expression. The forehead is traversed by raised curved lines, while a vertical extension rises from the top of the head.
Especially noteworthy is the treatment of the mask, reminiscent of the grotesque language of theatrical representations disseminated in the Greco-Roman world. These images occupied a prominent place in Roman decorative arts, especially in small bronze objects, ornamental plaques, and furniture elements.
The surface preserves an intense dark green patina, with earthy deposits and ochre tones that enhance the volumes and details of the modelling.
Condition: Generally good, with surface wear, adhering deposits and well-defined facial reliefs. It retains its characteristic upper prolongation and the lateral protrusion.
