Mosasaurus sp. fossil tooth, a fully rooted specimen from the Late Cretaceous (about 66 million years old), found in the Oudlad Abdoun Basin, Khouribga, Morocco; dimensions 12 cm high by 7.2 cm wide by 5 cm deep; condition: assembled; authenticity: original.
Description from the seller
MOSASAURUS SP. – FULLY ROOTED FOSSIL TOOTH
For sale: an authentic, fully rooted fossil tooth from a Mosasaurus sp., an impressive marine predator from the Late Cretaceous.
Mosasauruses were large predatory sea reptiles that dominated the world’s oceans during the Late Cretaceous. They were not dinosaurs, but belonged to the squamates group and were evolutionarily related to monitor lizards and snakes.
SPECIMEN INFORMATION
• Genus: Mosasaurus sp.
• Type: Fossil tooth – fully rooted
• Period: Late Cretaceous
• Age: Approximately 66 million years old.
• Locality: Oudlad Abdoun Basin, Phosphate Mines, Khouribga Morocco
• Original but the tooth is made onto the root
The most remarkable aspect of this specimen is that the tooth is fully rooted. Both the crown and the natural root have been preserved. This provides a beautiful view of the complete anatomical structure of a mosasaur tooth.
The crown has a beautiful natural brown-gold colour and a clearly visible glossy tooth enamel layer. The root is also well preserved and shows a characteristic fossil structure and natural mineralization.
Mosasaurus teeth were conical and robust, adapted to gripping and holding prey. Their diet included fish, ammonites, and other marine animals.
A REMARKABLE EXEMPLAR FOR COLLECTORS
Fully rooted Mosasaurus teeth are particularly interesting pieces for fossil collectors, because they provide a much more complete picture of the original tooth structure than specimens where only the crown has been preserved.
Due to their size, the complete root, and natural preservation, this is a striking specimen for a collection focused on mosasaurs, marine reptiles, or Late Cretaceous fossils.
PLEASE NOTE!
The crown has been made onto the root, so the root and crown are NOT associated.
No information card is included with this specimen. All available specimen information is contained in this description.
