Description from the seller
Antique 13-Loth silver snuff dish in silver with Phoenix and floral decorations - Germany, mid-19th Century (1830-1860)
Description:
Magnificent and rare small oval silver snuff plate, embossed and hand-chiseled, dating to the mid-19th century (Biedermeier period / Neo-Rococo Historicism).
At the center it features a refined and vigorous relief decoration (repoussé) depicting a mythological phoenix with wings spread beside flowers and pomegranate fruits. The edge is elegantly shaped with flowing acanthus-like motifs.
The object bears on the inner rim three clearly visible historic marks:
1. The number "13", indicating the old silver title in Loth (equivalent to a fineness of 812/1000), typical of German-speaking countries before 1888.
2. The letter "N", historically associated with the goldsmith city of Nuremberg (Nürnberg).
3. The maker's mark in the shape of a star.
The piece retains its splendid original dark patina in the crevices of the relief, giving exceptional depth and three-dimensionality to the design. No invasive restoration performed.
• Dimensions: 14 x 10 cm, height approximately 3.4 cm
• Weight: 60 grams
• Era: circa 1830-1860, around 1880 according to some sources
