AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ancient Roman Small Jug with Pouring Spout – Presumably 2nd–3rd Century AD

Offered for sale is a small, elegantly shaped ceramic jug which, based on its external characteristics, can presumably be attributed to the Roman Imperial period.

The vessel features a rounded, slightly pear-shaped body, a short, constricted neck, a distinctly formed pouring spout, and a single strap handle attached to the side. The base consists of a small, raised foot ring. Visible turning marks suggest that the vessel was produced on a potter's wheel.

A particularly attractive feature is the **matte red slip**, which remains preserved over large portions of the vessel. In some areas, the slip shows signs of wear, revealing the lighter-coloured clay beneath. The surface displays variations in colour and deposits that contribute to the overall appearance and character of the piece.

Dimensions and Characteristics

- Height: 9.7 cm
- Maximum diameter: approx. 7 cm
- Material: Fired clay / ceramic
- Surface: Matte red slip, partially worn
- Shape: Small single-handled jug with a formed pouring spout and raised foot

Historical Attribution

The shape shows similarities to Roman single-handled jugs from the Danubian and Balkan provinces, including examples from the territory of present-day Serbia. Based on its form, a date in the 2nd–3rd century AD appears plausible.

Due to its small size, the jug may have been used for storing or pouring small quantities of liquids, such as oil.

Condition

The vessel is largely complete. The red slip shows areas of wear, and age-related surface alterations are visible. Some irregularities can also be observed around the rim.

Provenance:
The jug was acquired by the present owner in 2003/4 from a private collection in Munich, Germany, and has demonstrably remained in his possession since that time.

The seller guarantees that this lot was legally acquired and that he is entitled to sell the object.

Shipping:
Insured DHL parcel shipping within the European Union.

Shipping is only possible within the EU. Please take this into account before placing a bid.
