Description from the seller
Splendid sculpture Madonna with Child - polychromed wood - late 17th century
A full-round sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child, carved in solid wood from a single trunk, with gypsum preparation and original polychromy, attributable to the late XVII.
A folk art work, with a manually drilled central hole at the base for processional mounting and traces of inactive historic woodworm. Traces of gilding on the mantle.
The Madonna's face is sweet and melancholic, with a gathered and maternal gaze, typical of popular devotional Baroque. The Child, chubby and blessing, turns affectionately toward the Mother.
The garment with flowing drapery and traces of gilding on the mantle, hair painted in black. At the base a manually executed central hole for mounting on a processional staff.
CONDITIONS:
Good and coherent for the period. Noted break with the loss of the left-hand thumb of the Madonna. Otherwise intact. Drops and craquelure in patches of the original polychromy on faces and drapery, ancient smoky patina, shrinkage crack at the base. Present traces of old restoration visible in the photos - left arm of Jesus, the hand and the middle finger of the Madonna's left hand.
DIMENSIONS: Height approx. 47 cm, weight: 2.20 kg
