Description from the seller

Antique Victorian Brass Drum Microscope with Fitted Wooden Case – c. 1870–1900

A charming and well-preserved antique brass drum microscope dating to the late 19th century, approximately 1870–1900. This compact scientific instrument features a telescopic brass body, traditional optical construction, and its original-style fitted wooden storage case.

The microscope is fully operational and has been successfully tested with a prepared specimen, offering a fascinating glimpse into the early history of microscopy.

Drum microscopes, also known as barrel microscopes, were developed as compact and portable alternatives to larger laboratory instruments. Their distinctive cylindrical construction evolved from earlier 18th-century designs and became particularly popular during the 19th century among naturalists, students, medical practitioners, and amateur scientists.

This example displays the characteristic design of Victorian-era portable microscopes, combining practical optical engineering with finely worked brass components.

The microscope features a telescopic brass optical tube with sliding focusing adjustment, a circular specimen stage with a central light aperture, and a lower illumination compartment containing an adjustable mirror.

Its cylindrical design allows the instrument to be compactly stored in the fitted wooden case, which retains its hinged construction, metal fittings, and internal supports.

The brass surfaces have developed an attractive natural patina, reflecting the instrument's age and historical character.

The microscope is in good antique condition, with surface wear, scratches, tarnishing, and oxidation consistent with its age. The wooden case also shows age-related wear, particularly around the edges and corners.

The optical system has been tested and successfully produces a magnified image.

- Important: The photograph showing the mouthparts of a housefly was taken through this microscope using a prepared specimen slide to demonstrate its working condition. The slide is for demonstration purposes only and is not included in the sale.

- Dimensions:

- Microscope height: 15 cm
- Wooden case: 16.5 × 5.5 × 6 cm
- Total weight including case: 274 g

An attractive and functional example of 19th-century scientific craftsmanship, suitable for collectors of antique optical instruments, historical scientific equipment, and Victorian curiosities.

The instrument will be carefully packed with appropriate protective materials to ensure safe shipping.
