This English Victorian document chest is made of mahogany and dates from 1850–1900.
Description from the seller
English mahogany document box – 19th century
Fine English mahogany document or storage chest from the 19th century, executed in a robust architectural form. The box is constructed from carefully selected wood with a warm reddish-brown colour and a nicely developed patina, appropriate to its age.
The front is dominated by a large recessed rectangular panel, framed by profiled mouldings. Notable are the turned ornaments at the four corners, which give the otherwise restrained design a decorative accent. The flat lid has a profiled, slightly overhanging edge and sits on the broad plinth at the bottom, giving the chest a solid and balanced appearance.
Central on the front is the original keyhole. The combination of panelwork, turned details and the dark, warm appearance of the mahogany aligns well with the English furniture traditions of the 19th century. Comparable mahogany chests were used for storing documents, correspondence, personal belongings or valuables.
A characterful antique chest in which the simple architecture, warm mahogany wood and subtle turned ornamentation contribute to an attractive 19th-century appearance.
