Description from the seller
ANTIQUE CARVED VICTORIAN OXBLOOD LEATHER BURGEMASTER CHAIR 17TH CENTURY DESIGN
English burgomaster's chair – richly carved wood and oxblood leather – 19th century in a 17th-century design
An imposing burgomaster's chair, presumably English and made in the 19th century after an older, 17th-century model. A particularly decorative chair with the stately presence and rich finish that this type makes so attractive.
The enveloping back is decorated with three openwork floral medallions, turned spindles and gracefully carved leaf motifs. The woodcarving runs along the seat rail to the six curved legs with powerful claw feet.
Oxblood red leather, finished with brass-colored decorative nails, forms a handsome contrast with the warm, dark brown wood. The patina and visible signs of wear give the chair a lived-in character.
A desirable piece of furniture for lovers of exclusive interiors, with high decorative value. A focal point in a library, traditional study, or gracious reception hall.
Origin: probably England.
Dating: probably 19th century, after a 17th-century model.
Condition: signs of use and wear to the wood and leather, including scratches on the seat. See the original photos for details and condition.
