Extra info
On 20 December 1934, a month after returning from Australia, the Uiver was on its way to Batavia for the second time. It was an extra flight for Christmas, and there was a lot of publicity, so 350 kg of Christmas mail was aboard. After a stopover in Cairo, the captain Willem Beekman, who had been with KLM since 1924 and had extensive experience on the India route, did not want to depart due to bad weather. KLM director Albert Plesman had threatened to dismiss him if this prestigious flight was delayed, because it would be a tremendous embarrassment if the famous Uiver arrived in the colony after the holidays with all the Christmas mail.
So the Uiver departed anyway, but it never reached Baghdad, the next stop. Owing to bad weather, it crashed near Ar-Rutbah (Rutbah Wells) in the Iraqi portion of the Syrian Desert. All seven occupants perished. The fire destroyed 145 kilograms of Christmas mail; the remaining 205 kilograms were severely damaged by fire and/or water damage and were eventually delivered in Batavia on 28 December 1934, provided with a special PTT tracking strip about the air crash.
This lot is offered in our special SSA Numistrust selection auction; this special semi-monthly sale ends after the Tuesday week-long auction. This special Single Seller Auction includes the Netherlands, VOC, and overseas territories.
