AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A fine Persian Diwan manuscript page from the most famous Sufi poet, Hafez dated AH120, which translates to 1708/9. The folio is in good condition with no signs of damage and little wear. The script is Persian poetry in black nasta'liq calligraphy, a cursive style common in Persian manuscript production. The upper columns carry Hafez's question and answer ghazal, "I said...he said..." with its closing couplet in a central panel flanked by two lapis-blue gilt floral panels. The lower panels open the celebrated ghazal satirising pulpit hypocrisy.

This is a good example of the finer editions of the Diwan of Hafiz, written in elegant black nasta'liq script on gold sprinkled paper, This would make a very fine addition to any collection of poetic manuscripts of Hafez.

The Dewan, which expresses Sufi ideals in lyrics, was written by Mohammed Shama od-din Hafez (1329-1399), a Sufi Muslim who practised a mystical form of Islam. His name 'Hafez' was given to those Muslims who could recite the Holy Koran by heart.

Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing.

Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.

New German customs regulations mean that we are now having to pay customs before the item leaves the UK. Regrettably we have to pass these costs on through a surcharge on postage to Germany. As we don't know the final auctions costs we have estimated the approximate value. If the custom costs more than we have anticipated, we will absorb the additional customs duty.
