According to Zen Buddhist tradition, Hideyoshi, on his deathbed, composed the following death poem, shaped by the Buddhist notion of impermanence of the world, in which he compared his life to a dream within a dream:
“Like the falling and fading dew I am!
Even Osaka Castle is only a dream within a dream.”
Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) was a Japanese general and statesman who contributed decisively to the unification of early modern Japan. He assumed office as general after the assassination of Oda Nobunaga, led the unification of Japan, and was succeeded by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who founded the Tokugawa dynasty of the Shogunate.
The clan lost power in 1615 with the death of Toyotomi Hideyori, son and heir of Hideyoshi, during the Siege of Osaka, when the lineage died out.
Handwritten Chronicle of the Minamoto Warriors
Buke (jap. 武家, dt. “warrior family(s)”) denoted the warrior class or sword nobility, as distinguished from the Kuge, the traditional Japanese court nobility. Members of this class were the Bushi and later specifically the Samurai.
