Al-Andalus is the Arabic name for the Muslim-ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula.
State law-wise, al-Andalus successively was a province founded by Caliph Al-Walid I of the Umayyad Caliphate or the Abbasids; this was followed by the Emirate of Córdoba, the Caliphate of Córdoba, and a group of Taifa kingdoms.

In the first half of the 13th century, large parts – except for the Emirate of Granada – were conquered by Christian powers. During long periods, especially during the time of the Caliphate of Córdoba, al-Andalus was a center of learning. Córdoba became a leading cultural and economic center for both the Mediterranean region and the Islamic world.

Abd ar-Rahmān was a great-nephew of al-Mundhir and succeeded his grandfather Abdallah (whose son, ʿAbd ar-Rahmāns father, had been executed by him) in the Emirate of Córdoba. He initially managed to suppress several revolts and subdue Seville. The rebel ʿUmar ibn Hafsūn submitted to Abd ar-Rahmān's rule with the assurance of impunity and remained loyal to him until his death.

After Abd ar-Rahmān had already reinforced the fleet, he responded for the first time to appeals for aid from Berber princes in the Maghreb against the Fatimids.

Abd ar-Rahmān had the fortress razed. In the same year the Marwanids of Mérida were subdued. With the conquest of Toledo, the pacification of the realm could be completed.
