ABOUT THE ARTIST AND THE WORK
Wolf Huber (Feldkirch, c. 1485 – Passau, 1553) was a painter, draftsman, and architect, court painter to the prince-bishop of Passau and one of the leading representatives of the Danube School, alongside Albrecht Altdorfer. This school, active in southern Germany and Austria in the first third of the 16th century, is known for giving landscape a leading role within the religious scene. The Escape to Egypt (Matthew 2:13–15), in which the Holy Family flees Herod’s persecution, was one of the favorite subjects for combining figure and landscape. According to the reverse legend, the reproduced work is preserved in the Berlin State Museums.
