Description from the seller

Bwete Reliquary Guardian in Kota Mahongwé Style - Gabon - 20th Century

Anthropomorphic wooden sculpture in a stylized form representing a Bwete reliquary guardian figure, characteristic of the Mahongwé people (Kota group, Gabon).
The concave ogival face is entirely covered with a veneer of slats and brass/copper wires fixed by small staples, forming horizontal geometric lines. The eyes are depicted in relief by two half-spheres (brass buttons or cabochons) framing a sharp, triangular nasal ridge. The upper part ends with a cylindrical rolled bun, while the base unfolds into a pierced diamond-shaped footrest.
Materials: wood, sheets and wires of copper alloy (brass/copper)
Origin: Gabon style (Central Africa)
Period: mid-20th century
Condition: Good overall condition with a surface oxidation patina and normal signs of use (see photos for details of assembly).
