A 3.43 g silver groat minted in London under Henry VI of England between 1422 and 1461.
Description from the seller
England – Henry VI of Lancaster (1422-1461)
Groat / Gros d’argent – London
Weight: 3.43 g
Diameter: 26 mm
Metal: silver
Beautiful medieval English coin struck under Henry VI of Lancaster, king of England and France.
Obverse:
Crowned bust of the sovereign facing forward, set within a polylobe. The portrait, the crown, and a substantial portion of the peripheral legend remain clearly visible.
Reverse:
Large long cross dividing the field into four quarters, with groups of three bezants. The London Mint legend, CIVITAS LONDON, allows attributing this coin to the Mint of London.
Type corresponds to the London groat of Henry VI, comparable to Spink 1874 / North 1460 references.
Medieval hammered coin showing normal ancient wear, some strike weaknesses and small surface irregularities.
Despite this circulation, the specimen retains good overall legibility, notably at the royal portrait, the crown, the cross, and the main legends.
The photographs show exactly the coin offered for sale and form an integral part of the description.
Beautiful coin from the House of Lancaster, of interest both for a collection of medieval English coins and for a collection devoted to the Hundred Years’ War.
