Crucifix - Metal - 1880-1920 - Elegant standing crucifix - 39.5 cm

Elegant standing crucifix – presumably around 1900 – with a richly decorated base

A characterful crucifix in which religious expression and decorative form come together. This standing crucifix draws attention with the detailed figure of Christ, the cloverleaf-shaped ends of the cross, and the distinctive, broad base.

The corpus is carefully modeled, with an expressive face, crown of thorns and folded loincloth. Above Christ is the traditional INRI inscription. Rays adorn the ends of the cross and the space above the head; at the bottom is a stylized flower.

The base forms a striking part of the design. Flowing, interlacing bands run over a finely textured background. This ornamentation evokes the Art Nouveau vocabulary, while the cloverleaf end pieces align with the Neo-Gothic tradition. A combination that supports a probable dating around the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

A atmospheric object for a collection of religious art, a home altar or a classical interior. The silvery finish and dark accents make the relief stand out beautifully.
