This Italian Empire-style display case from 1800–1850 contains five finely worked sulphur impressions of classical mythological scenes.
Description from the seller
Collection of five finely worked sulfur impressions, mounted inside a display case with an Empire-style frame.
Details of the Object:
Contents: The display case contains five sulfur casts, each depicting a different scene or classical mythological figure carved in bas-relief. These impressions, typical of the XVIIIth–XIXth century Grand Tour, served as cultured souvenirs and portable catalogs of famous ancient and modern gems.
Presentation: The impressions are arranged symmetrically on an intense blue velvet background, which enhances their ivory coloration and the definition of the details.
Supports: Each impression is mounted on a circular backing of cardboard or parchment, edged with a thin gilt strip.
Numbering: On some of the side edges of the supports are visible small numbers handwritten in dark ink (e.g., "106", "109", "33"), probably referring to an old catalog or a larger collection.
Subjects (based on observation): The scenes depict human and divine figures in classical poses, including profiles, standing figures, and complex multi-figure compositions.
Frame: The frame surrounding the display case is carved wood gilded with leaf gold, decorated with palmette and foliage motifs typical of the Empire or Restoration style. It shows signs of age and an authentic patina.
Dimensions: 25 x 30 cm (outer measurements, excluding frame).
Conditions:
The sulfur impressions appear intact and well preserved under glass. The blue velvet background preserves its vivid color. The gilded frame shows minor wear, small losses in the gilding, and imperfections consistent with the object's age and authenticity, which do not compromise its overall aesthetics but attest to its history. Please view the detailed photographs carefully, as they are an integral part of the description.
An opportunity for collectors:
This display case represents a piece of European collecting history and neoclassical taste. Ideal for enriching a Wunderkammer, a study, or a collection of glyptic gems and ancient art objects.
