This lot comprises 14 hand-painted wooden elephant figures in Shahi Sawaari and Kandyan styles, dating from the 1970s and in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
For sale is a charming lot of a total of 14 artistically designed elephant figures made of solid wood. The collectibles originate from the 1970s and are an authentic attic find from a family estate.
Note on categorization: According to my own research, the figures originate from the 1970s and can be attributed to traditional Asian handicraft. Each piece is a handmade unique item with fine ornaments, floral patterns and dot painting (Dot-Art). The set combines two classic styles:
• Shahi Sawaari style: figures with painted, magnificent saddle blankets, modeled after the royal procession elephants from India (Rajasthan).
• Kandyan / Singhalese folk art: elephants with fine dot and flower patterns, typical of traditional craftsmanship from Sri Lanka.
Two of the natural brown elephants also perch on ornate, integrated pedestals and showcase a detailed relief structure.
Condition:
The colors are exceptionally beautiful, vivid and fresh. The wood and the lacquer show only minimal, natural signs of aging. Please view the photos carefully; they depict the condition in detail and are an essential part of the description.
