Description from the seller
Refined devotional statue on a dressed mannequin depicting a Franciscan Saint (likely Saint Anthony of Padua or Saint Francis of Assisi), from the central-southern Italy, dating to the second half of the 19th century (circa 1860-1890).
Total height of a remarkable 65 cm.
By lifting the garment one appreciates the original 19th-century craftsmanship. The calves and feet are carved in wood and painted, while the upper part of the legs is made with traditional wrapping and stuffing in period stoppa (hemp/jute) around the central support spine.
Face and limbs—the head and extremities—present expressive and delicate features, with a splendid original polychromy from the period, well preserved.
The saint wears the typical Franciscan brown robe with a white cord. On the arm hangs his period rosary, complete with an authentic devotional medal in brass/bronze depicting the Miraculous Medal (the Virgin on the front and the traditional "M" with cross and twelve stars on the back).
The sculpture rests on its original octagonal wooden base, finely carved and gold-leaf gilded, showing a beautiful patina of time.
The work presents in excellent overall condition for its age. The wood and structure are healthy and solid. No significant recent restorations or breaks to the fingers of the hands and feet are evident, a very rare detail for such fragile items. The fabric is intact and clean.
