This French Couaillet Frères mechanical carriage clock, dating from 1910–1920, has a corniche-style case in brass, steel and glass.
Description from the seller
Travel clock, also called carriage clock or officer’s clock, from the French manufacture Couaillet Frères, established in Saint-Nicolas-d’Aliermont, a locality with a rich clockmaking tradition in Normandy.
The movement bears the characteristic Couaillet mark: a curved arrow with a widened end accompanied by four dots, located around the central time-setting axis. This mark dates its manufacture approximately to between 1903 and 1925.
Brass case in golden tone, corniche style, with mouldings, corner columns and a fold-out top handle. The bevelled crystals allow viewing the mechanism from the sides and the back. The upper oval window reveals the escapement and balance wheel. The rear door is glazed to access the winding and setting squares. White enamel dial with black Roman numerals, outer minute track, and blue-steel hands in a vivid blued finish. Mechanical wind movement with a bimetallic compensated balance and two independent trains: one for timekeeping and another for striking the hours and half-hours on a gong. The clock works correctly in both timekeeping and striking. Due to its age, periodic servicing is recommended to maintain proper operation.
Shows signs of wear and age, with surface wear, small marks and spots on the metal, visible in the detail photographs. The context images have been produced with AI and, unlike the others, do not carry a timestamp.
Approximate dimensions:
- Height with handle up: 15 cm
- Height with handle down: 12 cm
- Width: 8 cm
- Depth: 7 cm
- Weight: approximately 1 kg
The photographs are part of the description and show the clock’s condition and details. The timestamp on the images evidences the current state of the piece. It will be shipped the day after the auction closes, carefully protected in a reinforced box and with a tracking number.
