The Ethiopian Coptic priest’s hand cross is an original iron cross from the early 20th century, measuring 16 cm high, with provenance from a gallery owner and antiques dealer.
Description from the seller
Ethiopia Coptic Hand Cross from the Orthodox Coptic Church.
This iron cross measures approximately 16 cm high. This is a very old iron cross.
For the Ethiopian church the cross is not only a symbol of Christ's suffering and death; more importantly, it still signifies the Resurrection.
The cross often conveys a liberating and protective effect in Ethiopian representations, pointing to the place of the crucifixion, and expresses not only admiration for the dead Christ but also functions as an icon. This function is clearly expressed in the prayer designated "The protective wall of the Crosses". The procession crosses carried by priests during services and religious meetings create an atmosphere of the sacred and of liberation, and symbolically guide the believer along the path of life. Procession crosses are produced in the wax-fuse procedure.
