This 15.2 × 15.2 cm Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) earthenware tile was made by Georg Bankel Wandplattenfabrik in Lauf bei Nürnberg around 1900–1910, features geometric dust-pressed relief decoration, is marked “BANKEL LAUF” on the back and is in fair, heavily used condition with numerous small glaze chips.

Art Nouveau tile made by: Georg Bankel Wandplattenfabrik, Lauf bei Nürnberg, Germany. This factory was founded in 1905. The geometric decoration is relief-applied by means of a dust-pressed technique in which clay powder is compacted under high pressure in a mold. I have been trading antique tiles for almost 20 years. I sell medieval lead glazed floor tiles. Italian, Spanish and Portuguese tiles from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. Dutch tiles from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as tiles from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period. I sell at special tile fairs in Germany and England, through Catawiki and eBay and through my website.
