Description from the seller

Imperial Russian Icon – Semyon Grigorievich Galkin – Moscow 1896 – 84 zolotnik silver

A special 130-year-old Russian icon of the Mother of God of Kazan, fitted with a richly chased silver oklad (riza) from the workshop of the renowned Moscow silversmith Semyon Grigorievich Galkin.

This beautiful Russian Orthodox icon shows the Mother of God of Kazan (Kazanskaya) with the Christ Child. The painted depiction on a wooden panel is surrounded by a richly decorated silver oklad (riza), with the faces and hands visible.

The silver mounting is exceptionally beautifully executed, with detailed relief decorations, finely engraved ornaments, and richly adorned nabes (nimben).

Original Russian silver assay marks

The icon bears multiple historical marks that provide important information about origin and dating:

Silversmith: Semyon Grigorievich Galkin (Семён Григорьевич Галкин)
Master mark: С.Г.
Assay master: Anatoli Apollonovich Artsibashev (А.А.)
Assay year: 1896
Origin: Moscow, Imperial Russia
Silver assay: 84 zolotnik – corresponding to 875/1000 silver

The combination of the master mark of Galkin and the dated assay mark of master Artsibashev connects the silver oklad with Moscow silversmithing of 1896.

Condition

The icon is in an authentic antique state with a beautiful natural patina.

The painting shows age-related craquelure and localized paint loss. The silver oklad shows normal wear and aging signs, including light deformations and surface tarnish.

The icon has not been recently restored or polished as far as can be known. The historical appearance and old patina have been preserved.
