Description from the seller
"Vestige du Septizone de l'Empereur Sévère à Rome" is an etching by Gabriel Pérelle, signed "Fait par Perelle" and published in Paris by Nicolas Langlois with royal privilege. It shows the three tiers of columns that remained of the Septizodium at the foot of the Palatine, among ruins and rocks, with travellers in the foreground and hills beyond.
The Septizodium, built by Septimius Severus in 203 as a monumental façade at the entrance to Rome from the Appian Way, was pulled down by Pope Sixtus V in 1588-1589, and views like this preserve its appearance.
