Mask, Gouro culture, Côte d'Ivoire. Height 37 cm

Magnificent Gouro mask from Côte d'Ivoire. The face is elegant and gentle. The gaze is deep and mysterious. It seems to look beyond time. This is a work that exudes a lot of sensitivity. The sculpture is fine; it is the work of a seasoned artist. It is covered with black paint with additions of white and orange pigments. Feathers were affixed to the top of the mask; the holes allowing them to be inserted are visible. There is also a part of animal skin remaining. Fabrics hiding the wearer completed this mask. The whole is superb and harmonious. It is a classic and timeless work. The face reminds me of Amedeo Modigliani's sculptures.

Superbe masque Gouro de Côte d'Ivoire. Le visage est élégant et doux. Le regard est profond et mystérieux. Il semble regarder au delà du temps. C'est une oeuvre dont il se dégage beaucoup de sensibilité. La sculpture est fine, c'est l'oeuvre d'un artiste aguerri. Il est recouvert de peinture noire avec un ajout de pigments blanc et orange. Des plumes étaient fichées en haut du masque, les trous permettant de les insérer sont visibles. Il reste aussi une partie de peau animal. Des tissus cachant le porteur complétaient ce masque. L'ensemble est superbe et harmonieux. C'est une oeuvre classique et intemporel. Le visage me fait penser aux sculptures de Amedeo Modigliani.
