Description from the seller
We celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi with two coins that seek to crystallize significant moments in the life of this illustrious scientist, an emblematic figure in the history of telecommunications and Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909: the 2-euro bi-metallic coin in the Fior di Conio and Mirror Field versions, and the 25-euro colored silver coin in the Mirror Field version. For the 2-euro coin, produced in the two versions FDC and PROOF, artist Loredana Pancotto draws inspiration from a famous photograph taken on February 12, 1931, a historic date marking the inauguration of Vatican Radio. In the image, Guglielmo Marconi appears beside Pope Pius XI and the Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli, future Pope Pius XII. Below we present the historic words of the first message transmitted by Vatican Radio and spoken by Marconi himself: "I have the high honor to announce that in a few moments His Holiness Pius XI will inaugurate the radio station of the State of Vatican City. The electromagnetic waves will carry around the world, through space, his word of peace and blessing..."
