Parastone - D'après Bugatti - Sculpture, ***Éléphant D’Asie Mendiant*** - 24.5 cm - Polystone, Resin

Begging Asian Elephant

Magnificent subject in polystone resin, model Begging Asian Elephant, after Bugatti, in excellent overall condition.

Bugatti was already fascinated by the African elephants in the Jardin des Plantes, when he lived in Paris. He had in Antwerp ample opportunity to study their Asian counterparts in their spectacular enclosure, which took the form of an Egyptian temple. Bugatti went there almost every day and loved feeding these begging giants, extending a very sensitive trunk.

Rembrandt Annibale Bugatti (16 October 1884 in Milan - 8 January 1916 in Paris 7e) is an Italian animal sculptor. He is the son of Italian designer Carlo Bugatti, the grandson of Giovanni Luigi Bugatti, a renowned Italian sculptor and architect, the younger brother of Ettore Bugatti, founder of the Bugatti brand in 1909 in France, and the uncle of the Franco-Italian driver Jean Bugatti.
