-> Antoninus Pius was Roman Emperor from 138 to 161 AD and is one of the 'Five Good Emperors' from the Nerva Antonine dynasty. His reign is notable for the internal peace and prosperity with no major revolts or military incursions. In 142 AD the Antonine Wall was built to protect the Roman frontier in Britain.
He was married to Faustina the Elder, niece of Emperor Hadrian. Antoninus was greatly distressed after Faustina died in 141 AD and created a charity in her honour, known as the Girls of Faustina, which assisted destitute girls of good family.
His extensive coinage vividly reflected this stable and peaceful era, serving as an important tool for imperial communication. The Emperor utilised Roman coins to celebrate significant anniversaries, announce his acts of generosity, and promote traditional Roman virtues such as piety, peace, and health.
Following the death of his beloved wife, Antoninus issued a vast and highly influential series of commemorative coins featuring the portrait of the deified Faustina the Elder, ensuring her memory endured across the Empire.
Upon his death, his careful financial management ensured that he left behind for his successors a large surplus in the treasury.
