Late Period, ca. 664-332 BC
A faience amulet depicting Isis with the infant Horus, the goddess shown frontally with the child held closely against her body in the traditional nursing pose. Isis wears a tall headdress and is modelled with her arms gathered around the infant. A transverse piercing through the upper body allowed the amulet to be suspended and worn.
Isis was one of the principal goddesses of ancient Egypt, the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. As the mother of the god who embodied legitimate kingship, she was also symbolically regarded as the divine mother of the pharaoh. The image of Isis nursing the infant Horus emphasised her roles as mother, protector and giver of life. Small amulets of this type invoked those qualities on behalf of their owners, while larger statuettes of the same subject were dedicated in temples and shrines. The image became particularly widespread during the first millennium BC, and the cult of Isis continued to expand under the Ptolemies and subsequently throughout much of the Roman world.
